If you love traveling to Johor Bahru (JB) from Singapore, you need to know about a major shift in enforcement coming soon. The grace period is officially over. Starting November 15th, Malaysian authorities are implementing strict, full-scale enforcement of the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) rules and non-compliance will bring your trip to a sudden halt.

Here is what you need to know to avoid getting stranded at the border:

🚦 The Key Change: Barred from Leaving Malaysia

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has announced a critical policy change:

“Fines will be imposed, and vehicle owners must settle them and complete VEP registration before departing Malaysia. This measure is intended to prevent any complications at the Malaysia-Singapore border,”

No VEP, No Exit: Any foreign vehicle owner or driver who has not obtained or activated a VEP will be prohibited from leaving Malaysia until all outstanding issues are resolved.

Settle Fines First: You will be required to settle all outstanding fines and complete your VEP registration before you are allowed to exit the country.

Who is Affected: This full enforcement covers all foreign vehicles — both privately-owned and company-owned — that: lack a valid VEP, holds an expired VEP, or are stuck in pre-registration status.

🗺️ Enforcement is Now Nationwide
While VEP enforcement initially focused on Johor, the JPJ has confirmed that operations are being expanded nationwide. This means that a Singapore-registered vehicle found without a valid VEP anywhere in Malaysia is subject to enforcement action.

Authorities have already been serious about enforcement, issuing over 4,000 fines totaling RM1.2 million since July.
